New BMW X6 debuts in Nigeria a la luxury car supremo, Coscharis Motors.

The question first needs to be asked - what exactly is a BMW X6? It's not a "jeep" per se, its not a hatchback, and its certainly not an offroader. It's an SUV. Well, sort of. For the neophytes, SUV stands for Sports Utility Vehicle, and while the X6 is long on sports, its certainly short on utility. But frankly, who cares? You don't buy Louis Vuitton to carry your load around town, or drink Evian water because its healthy.

These like the X6 are full on luxury items which tell your story well before you speak. In fairness to BMW, the X6 is actually called an SAC - Sports Activity Coupe. So there you have it. The confusion has been cleared up by the manufacturer. It's a coupe!

This is a style statement like no other. Well, not unless you consider the Acura ZDX. And the forthcoming Mercedes Benz GLE Coupe. But we digress.

 

The BMW X6 comes in two trim levels: xDrive 35i and xDrive50i. The xDrive35i is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 armed with a 300 horsepower motor, and 300 pound-feet of torque, while the xDrive50i is a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 with 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Both cars come with 8 speed automatic transmission.

All X6 models are equipped with all-wheel drive and a torque distribution system called Dynamic Performance Control, which apportions varying amounts of power to each wheel in order to maintain optimal traction and directional stability.

The xDrive35i comes standard with a power liftgate, adaptive xenon headlights, leather upholstery, electric front seats, the iDrive electronics interface and a 10-speaker audio system. The xDrive50i steps things up with a turbocharged V8, upgraded front seats and a navigation system.

Inside, the BMW X6 boasts an excellent driving position and high-quality materials. Rear dimensions are compromised because of the low slung roof line, but two adults will be just about comfortable in back; for short rides. Should you need to carry another person, an optional three-place bench can be specified instead of the standard two-seat layout. Cargo capacity, while adequate, is considerably below average for the midsize crossover SUV segment. But again, who wears Manolo Blaniks for comfort, or even worse, utility?

In reviews, editors have lauded the X6's sprightly performance, especially in xDrive50i trim. BMW claims the latter can accelerate from zero to 60 in just over 5 seconds, making it one of the fleetest SUVs on the road. The V8's throaty exhaust burble belies its sophisticated turbocharged character. In either trim, the X6 handles extraordinarily well for such a tall and heavy vehicle. It's worth noting, however, that the more versatile X5 crossover offers most of the X6's performance for thousands less.
