LAMATA to Construct Barriers to Tackle Traffic Gridlock

LAMATA to Construct Barriers to Tackle Traffic Gridlock

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, has concluded plans to erect a one-kilometre long concrete fence with iron see-through grating between the service lane and main carriageway from Mile 12 towards Ketu as part of traffic control measures along Ikorodu Road.

This came barely a week after the launch of Mile 12-Ikorodu Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, classic operations with 434 buses ready for operation.

The plan, according to the World Bank assisted-agency, will also include the construction of median jersey barrier and multiple lay-by for commercial buses and other uses.

Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Communication and Communities, disclosed this at a stakeholders meeting with executives of Mile 12 Market, the Local Council Development Area, Community Development Association and LAMATA.

According to him, the measures are aimed at finding a lasting solution to the incessant traffic gridlock at Mile 12 and ensure free flow of traffic through the area.

He said  government was more than committed to tackling the current traffic challenges being experienced in the state to create an enabling environment for everyone to thrive.

Bamigbetan noted that the recent launch of BRT operation along the newly commissioned BRT Extension corridor from Ikorodu to CMS via Mile 12 has brought new lease of life to residents and businesses along the corridor and has demonstrated the commitment of the government to delivering world class public transport infrastructure and services.

The Special Adbviser, therefore, urged the market executives and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government and LAMATA in the implementation of the planned traffic measure at Mile 12 in order for the full benefits of the BRT extension project to be realised.

Deputy Director Safety, LAMATA, Mr. Olajide Oduyoye, said the traffic control measures to be implemented will address other issues beyond the traffic gridlock usually experienced between Mile 12 and Ketu.

Oduyoye urged all the stakeholders to support the government towards the implementation of the measures, which will also contribute to the well-being of the Mile 12 traders.

Speaking at the event, AfolabiKazeem, the executive secretary, Ikosi-Isheri local council development area, commended the state government for the planned intervention, saying the intervention would improve the development of local council development area.

A representative of the traders, Shehu Usman pledged on behalf of the market executives support and cooperation towards the implementation of the planned traffic measures while calling on the State government for more intervention around the Mile 12 market.
